The Glass Ceiling of Malagasy Coffee
Despite its potential, Madagascar’s coffee sector remains trapped in a cycle of underperformance.
We see three primary barriers:
The robusta stigma: Over 95% of Madagascar’s output is Robusta—a variety systematically ignored by the speciality coffee market. We believe it’s time to challenge that bias.
Structural isolation: A systemic lack of roads, processing facilities, and cooperative networks makes sourcing difficult. For international buyers, finding a stable supply of export-grade beans is nearly impossible.
A fragmented farmer base: Smallholders dominate the landscape but lack a support ecosystem. Without access to training or shared resources, they are left to navigate the market alone.
The Result: A closed loop. Local buyers benefit from a fragmented system that keeps quality and prices low. Meanwhile, the lack of infrastructure prevents new players from entering. This stagnation leaves both the coffee’s quality and the farmer’s income stuck at the bottom.
