How does the Renegade Coffee Vault work in practice?
The vault system is designed to address the biggest bottleneck in the Malagasy coffee sector.
Today, farmers usually have only two options:
- Sell immediately to local buyers who don’t really care about quality.
- Work with cooperatives and wait months to get paid, after the cooperative is paid by export buyers.
As some of the poorest farmers in the world, most Malagasy producers understandably choose immediate cash - even if it means lower prices and no incentive to improve quality.
The system can be changed by offering farmers immediate cash and a premium price for high-quality coffee during the peak harvest season. What is needed is a consolidator with a long-term view and willingness to take some risks. It also requires free cash to pay for the beans while sales might happen several months later. Thats where our Coffee Vault comes into play.
So, what we are going to do:
1. In partnership with the local cooperative in Andemaka, we set up a buying point for selected, high-quality coffee cherries. We pay farmers a fair, premium price that increases their incomes.
2. The cherries are processed and dried by the cooperative, using proper tools and needed attention.
3. For each kg of resulting high-quality coffee that we store in our Vault, we will mint a warehouse token.
4. For each 1 kg of stored green beans, each Vault member receives 0,005 Euros of harvest bonus in the form of Renegade Beans shop credit (E.g. In case our Coffee Vault stores 10 000 kg of green coffee beans, each patron receives 50 EUR of Renegade Beans shop credit. )
5. Shop credit is loaded to accounts once per year, when the container leaves Madagascar (most likely in October of each year). Founding members receive a harvest bonus every year, as long as the Vault is operational.
